A two day camping tour to Bathurst Island provides a unique opportunity to experience a modern day Aboriginal community and learn about the history and the culture of the Tiwi People from a local resident’s perspective, plus the adventure of camping in a remote location and learning more about the way of life on the Island. You haven't seen Australia's Northern Territory until you've seen the Tiwi Islands. The Islands are home to the Tiwi People, coastal island Aborigines with permanent smiles. The Tiwi Islanders have been welcoming tourists to their island for nearly 20 years. If you are looking for a real Aboriginal culture exchange this is it! There are no touristy gimmicks, tacky souvenir shops or high tech staged performances. You’ll visit the modern day Aboriginal community of Nguiu (pronounced new-you) with a population of 2000 and be shown around by a local guide.

For those who want a more hands on experience camp overnight in the northern part of the island and participate in traditional food hunting and gathering. The Tiwi people are experts at living off the land and often collect their favourite bush foods. Dare to try mangrove worm or their favourite carpet snake.Don’t worry, you won’t have to rely on your catch normal food is included and we look after most dietary requirements.

Day 1: Darwin - Tiwi Islands

Included You will be transferred from your hotel to Darwin General Aviation Airport . Please refer to page 44 for today's itinerary (DBØ1).
Accommodation: Moantu Camp, Bathurst Island . (LD)

Day 2: Tiwi Islands - Darwin

After breakfast travel out to the westernmost point of Bathurst Island - Cape Fourcroy and explore the rugged coastline. Walk along this beautiful beach in search of turtle nests. There will be many opportunities to see a diverse range of native wildlife, so don't forget your cameras! Learn about traditional uses of the native flora and fauna with your Tiwi Guide. Visit Tomorrupi Waterfall and cool off in the refreshing water and enjoy a picnic lunch. Visit a Tiwi Burial Site and learn about some of the complex rituals associated with the Pukumani Poles (Burial Poles before returning to Nguiu for your return flight to Darwin (additional cost). The roads can be dusty, not a place for your best clothes. For a truly memorable experience, client participation is encouraged. This tour is suitable for most adults and children over five. A reasonable level of fitness is required.
